PSLD UB Invites Parents of New Students with Disabilities for Service Effectiveness

Kota Malang—As a continuation of the previous agenda, today CDSS UB holds a socialization on services and studies available to students with disabilities. This activity is held at LP3M UB Meeting Room 4th Floor Gedung Layanan Bersama on Tuesday, 14 August 2018.

The Chairman of the UB Center for Disability Studies and Services (CDSS) Fadillah Putra, Counseling coordinator Unita Werdi Rahajeng, and service affairs coordinator Alies Poetri Lintangsari, provide an explanation of CDSS UB to the participants.

The Chairman explains that inclusive education is actually the duty of everyone. “Even compared to you all, we are actually nothing. You are with them all day, while we only facilitate the needs of people with disabilities in the academic realm,” he says. In his remarks, he also explains the profile of CDSS UB, ranging from functions, services, studies, to the achievements and challenges that CDSS UB has faced since its establishment in 2012.

“There are some services that they have not maximized to use, even though they really need them. You need to look after them, to what extent they can access the available facilities we provide,” Alies Poetri Lintangsari adds.

Establishment of a Parent Forum
As parents’ meetings in previous years, this agenda has also wanted to bring parents of new students with disabilities into a communication forum to strengthen each other. Guided by Yuyun Riani, the audience agree to create a forum which can communicate matters relating to their children.

Before the forum is formed, the delivery of the introduction is preceded by one of the parents of a disability student in the previous year who shares her experiences in escorting his child’s education process in Universitas Brawijaya.

“It is very important to recognize what disabilities they have. Thus, there is an urge to make them confident with that situation,” she says firmly. “My child has autism syndrome, and he realizes it. Therefore, he can position himself what to do,” she explains.

In the session, participants also gained many ideas related to things outside the academic world but related to their lecture activities, such as how to find and determine a home to live, how to deal with daily needs, and others.
